I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. ~ Psalm 9:1

What in the world is “Unfolding Sovereignty”? And what in the world does sovereignty have to do with roses and thorns? Good questions - let me try and explain.

I started this blog for two purposes really. First, in a few short months I will be leaving my home state and moving to another part of the country. When this happens, I would like to have a venue to be able to update friends and family on how the Lord is working in my life and the specific ways He is showing Himself faithful. Thus, you have the “chronicles” aspect of the title – I would like to chronicldscf0631e the sovereign workings of the Lord in my life.

Second, I find myself often having “musings” about various aspects of life: theology, history, literature, rain, music, nostalgia, love, human nature, politics, peanut butter, etc. This blog is a venue for writing about those musings, whether serious, silly, morbid, hopeful, pessimistic, true, false, or anything in between.

So, I’ve titled my blog “Unfolding Sovereignty: Chronicles and Muses on Roses and Thorns” because the God of my life, and the God of your life, whether you acknowledge Him or not, is totally and eternally sovereign. He has directed and continues to direct all of human history and existence by His omnipotent (all powerful) and omniscient (all knowing) hand; He is in complete control over every aspect of all eternity, including our lives. However, although He knows “the end from the beginning,” we do not, so for us, life is an “unfolding story,” something which has yet to be lived, experienced, discovered, and accomplished. For us then, as God’s creatures, life is indeed an “unfolding,” a gradual revelation of His sovereign will and plan for us.

Because of sin, however, this life which we are living and which is daily unfolding for us, is full of both beauties and sorrows, roses and thorns. It is easy for us to say that God is sovereign over the roses, but often, we don’t easily admit that He is sovereign over the thorns. However, Scripture plainly teaches that God is lovingly sovereign over all existence, and thus, both the roses and the thorns are gifts from His hand.

So, my hope for this blog is to try and chronicle the sovereignty of God in my life, both through the roses and the thorns, and at the same time, do some reflection, some musing about the beauty and sorrow, the joy and the suffering, the difficulties and the hope that are found in this unfolding, forward march toward Heaven. Through all of that, I hope my words will be a testimony to the glory of God and His loving sovereignty over human existence and experience.

Soli Deo Gloria

One Response to “About the Blog”

  1. A good start to your blog! Seminary is hard (I know: M.Div, Talbot, 1994), but seminary is also fun. The trick is to keep the balance of both.
